The Clowes Gallery at Newfields Reimagined

After a three-year, multi-million-dollar renovation of the Clowes Pavilion in the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, the Clowes Collection has now returned to public view.  Named after its creator, Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes, it remains the finest collection of Old Master paintings in Indiana and forms the nucleus of the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s permanent collection of European art.

Fifty years after the dedication of the Clowes Gallery, this reinstallation showcases a total of 90 objects spanning various times, places, cultures, and media. Their inclusion offers visitors a fresh perspective on significant social and historical themes. Several works of art are also accompanied by innovative and engaging interpretive elements. New to the Pavilion is a state-of-the-art digital LED ceiling in the courtyard evoking an outdoor space in the heart of the museum.

Dr. Kjell Wangensteen, Associate Curator of European Art, will lead our tour of the reopened gallery and explain the rationale behind the reorganized space.

    • This is a group for people who like to cook and sit down and share a meal with friends as well as getting to know new people. It is an opportunity for IWI members' partners to participate as well. The group leader suggests a theme and the host usually provides the main dish with the rest of the group bringing other dishes. The cost of the meal is split between the whole group.

The end of summer still offers a bounty of fresh seasonal vegetables and fruits like tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, sweet corn, peaches and strawberries. For September's evening dinner group let's be adventurous and leave out the meat! Vegan and vegetarian cooking is good for the planet and for your health and there are many delicious dishes that could satisfy even the most diehard carnivore. Let us aim for vegan but if that is a stretch too far vegetarian is acceptable. Please email Sarah if you can host and if you would like to attend or to learn more about this group. Partners are welcome or come on your own or with a friend.

    What: Vegan/Vegetarian dinner

When: Saturday November 12th at 6.30 pm

    Group Leader: Sarah Gray
