Join Explore and Discover Art for A Day in Crawfordsville.

10 AM:  Tour of Jerry Smith’s Gallery and Studio.  Jerry Smith began oil painting as a hobby in the early 1970’s, switching to watercolor shortly thereafter. Primarily through self-training and workshops he left his business career behind and has been a full-time artist since the mid-seventies. He now paints in oils, watercolors, and acrylics. He is a fellow in the American Watercolor Society, a member of the Hoosier Salon (showing in over 40 Salon exhibitions), author of books, and nationally known.  He will talk with us about his painting, his inspiration, and his technique.

Presidential Explorations

The Gardening and Explore Groups are joining forces for a tour of the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Home and Gardens. We will take a guided tour of this historic Victorian home and walk in the footsteps of the 23rd President of the United States. Afterwards we can head out into the gardens for an informal walk around the gardens led by IWI member Laurel Burns, a master gardener who volunteers at the gardens.  The cost is $14 per person, payable in advance.  Jeanne will collect money via Zelle, check or in person at the May luncheon.  Spaces are limited and RSVPs are due by May 6th, so that sufficient docents can be available.

Let’s visit local Indiana artisans located a short drive northeast of Indianapolis. Willow by Greg Adams is a workshop/showroom in downtown Lapel, filled with abundance of furniture, accent pieces, picture frames, garden trellises and other items that Greg makes from natural wood that he gathers himself. Greg has been in this business for over 40 years and you may have seen his items at local events. He will tell us how he got started in this business, how he makes his items, and show us some items. (For those with sensitivities, there may be sawdust as this is both his workshop and storefront.) We will also visit Mercantile 37, which is an old restaurant in the middle of a field that has been converted to a studio showroom and café. The galleries are filled with vintage and locally made items that include home furnishings, apothecary items and gifts produced by 70+ local artists. The café will hopefully be open for those desiring to grab a coffee or bite to eat.

Please RSVP not later than March 20th to Explore Group Leader, Jeanne Lugo.  Candice Kavanaugh is now the assistant Explore leader and will be helping to come up with great ideas for the future.
