Join "Traditions & Treasures," a monthly gathering where members share personal stories, traditions, crafts, and cultural treasures from their heritage. Through show-and-tell and interactive presentations, we celebrate diversity, spark curiosity, and deepen appreciation for our international community.

    February meeting

Some people grow up with superheroes from comic books. Growing up in South Africa, Ansuyah’s hero didn’t wear a cape, he wore a warm smile and an unshakable sense of hope. NELSON MANDELA!
Nelson Mandela’s profound influence was woven into everyday life. Beneath the history, there was a man who carried kindness, humor, and generosity wherever he went. As Ansuyah takes us on a journey with him through Long Walk To Freedom (autobiography of Nelson Mandela), she will share personal memories and reflections from her life in the 80s and 90s, when South Africa was changing and so was she.

What: ”How Nelson Mandela Shaped a Generation—Including Me” by Ansuyah Naiken

When: Tuesday, February 17 at 1:00-3:00

    • St. Luke's United Methodist Church or Zoom

Greetings! Happy and Healthy New Year!! We have a very special program this month that I think many of you will be interested in. We are going to see a documentary film on the importance of the sacred and the nature of the sacred feminine. It is entitled "As She Is" and will be shown at St. Luke's UMC in the Community Room and over Zoom. Afterwards the Producer and Director of the film, Megan McFeely, will meet with us over Zoom to discuss the film and answer our questions.

She writes that she herself "follows the inner path of Sufism and has been on a journey towards what is natural, essential and authentic for most of her life.  The question, 'who are we as human beings from the inside of ourselves?' has been at the center of her inquiry.

"She has spent more than 25 years providing strategic communications counsel for media and technology companies, authors and non-profit organizations, garnering solid story-telling experience on all media platforms — Internet, broadcast, public and cable television, print and radio. She has also worked in production on several film and television projects.

"As She Is," her first documentary, was screened first at the Library of Alexandria in Egypt to 200 women activists from 20 different nations.  It won best debut documentary at the Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto in 2016, and since then it has been screened in more than 40 countries. It is currently distributed through Gaia TV on the Amazon platform or free from her website at:  wwww.as-she-is.org/free.

"As She Is" is a timely and deeply moving documentary which explores the intimate nature of the human relationship to the sacred in life.  With lush imagery, a moving soundtrack, and candid interviews, this film explores how masculine ways can give way to feminine relation and belonging—and redress a human world so out of balance. Simultaneously activist and contemplative, this film examines the roots of our current cultural crisis and reveals the power of the individual to influence the whole."

What: Viewing of the award-winning documentary "As She Is" by Megan McFeely, producer and director who will join us afterwards on Zoom for a discussion and Q & A.

    When: Thursday, January 8th, 2026 at 10:00 a.m.

Where: Over Zoom and In person: We meet in the Community Room at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th Street, Indianapolis. Please go around to the west/left side of the church to door 6 and enter. Turn right and go about 25 feet. The Community Room will be on your left, across from the church office. Please feel free to bring your own beverage.
