Join "Traditions & Treasures," a monthly gathering where members share personal stories, traditions, crafts, and cultural treasures from their heritage. Through show-and-tell and interactive presentations, we celebrate diversity, spark curiosity, and deepen appreciation for our international community.
November meeting
In this event of the series, Thuy Schelkopf will share with you her perspective of what it was like growing up as the daughter of a 3-star general, in South Vietnam, during a time when North and South Vietnam were in a civil war, when the family would be split apart soon afterwards, and how the family embraced early life lessons to overcome refugee status and prosper.
What: “Glory and Suffering of the Vietnamese General” by Thuy Schelkopf
When: Friday, November 7th, from 10am-noon
Where: Motoko Kataoka’s home
RSVP: Space is limited, so please confirm your attendance by RSVP to Motoko

You are welcome to bring refreshments to share, though it is entirely optional.
December meeting
Please join Amy Castañares as she shares her Norwegian heritage with you. Her grandfather was full Norwegian, so they continue to celebrate their Norwegian ancestry with her large extended family. You will learn about the culture, arts, food and lifestyle of the Norwegians. She will also discuss what it was like for them to immigrate to North Dakota from Norway.
Let’s incorporate the holiday season and enjoy a pot luck pitch in. Please bring a savory dish to share with 18 people. Amy can accommodate 17 members in her home for a presentation, sit down meal and Lefse demonstration. She will make Norwegian desserts and will have a hands-on cooking demonstration on how to make “Lefse”.
Since this group has gained popularity and the two recent meetings have had a wait list, priority will be given to members that have/will host. Amy will send out a list of attendees to confirm you are on the list.
