The Discover Art & Explore Groups will visit Muncie together to tour the Owsley Museum of Art, as well as the Minnetrista Exhibition and Gardens. In the morning, we will have a guided tour of the Owsley Museum located on the Ball State Campus, which houses the Ball Family private art collection and art collections from ancient China, India and Southeast Asia, donated by David Owsley. We will have lunch nearby and then head to Minnetrista, where we can visit their museum and exhibitions, tour the Oakhurst Experience and the Bob Ross Experience (famous local artist who hosted “The Joy of Painting” on PBS) and browse through their gardens. Information on cost (minimal), parking, lunch, carpooling, etc. will be provided later. The tour size is limited, and this will probably be a popular event, so please RSVP early. Priority will be for IWI members.

The Explore Group will be given a tour of the new Carmel Clay History Museum in downtown Carmel, located along the Monon Greenway, one block south of Main Street.

This museum is much larger and more expansive than their previous museum we visited several years ago. After the tour, you are free to explore downtown Carmel, or some of us may stop for ice cream, coffee, or a late lunch. Admission to the museum is free. The children’s play area (ages 1 and older) is $1 per child. Street parking isavailable nearby or in a parking garage north of the museum at the corner of First Street

SW and Third Avenue SW.

There will not be Explore! meeting in June.

Pour Your (Acrylic) Heart Out

In May, join the IWI Discover Art group for a truly unique hands-on creative experience. Mixed media artist Dawn Michaelis will guide participants in creating their own small acrylic pour painting—perfect to take home and display.

Acrylic pouring is a captivating abstract art technique in which fluid acrylic paints are poured onto a surface to create dynamic, one-of-a-kind designs. Dawn incorporates this method as the foundation of her mixed media artwork, later enhancing pieces with plaster and resin to create dimensional elements such as tree branches, flowers, birds, and even ears of corn.

During this session, participants will focus on the acrylic pouring process and complete a make-and-take project. While time will not allow for additional dimensional details, each attendee will leave with their own unique piece of art—and a memorable creative experience

In June, Discover Art will return to the Eiteljorg Museum for a docent tour of the exhibit Cowboy Couture. This exhibit is the first solo exhibition for Indianapolis-based fashion designer Jerry Lee Atwood. Atwood’s couture Western suits bridge the styles of the past to contemporary pop culture figures. His work uses chain-stitch embroidery, hand-applied embellishments, and a narrative-driven graphic design based on individual collaboration between artist and wearer.

What: Our vibrant group is the perfect place to practice and improve your French skills in a friendly and supportive environment. Our sessions are filled with lively discussions based on selected readings from French magazines, books, and articles. We explore a variety of topics - from travel and history to current affairs, French culture, notable Francophone figures, and even the art of French cuisine. These engaging themes not only broaden your horizons but also help you sharpen your comprehension, grammar and spoken French. We meet virtually on Zoom on the 2^nd and 4^th Mondays of the month at 11:00 AM, making it easy to join from everywhere. Interested in joining? After enjoying several Maigret novels, we have recently taken on a more challenging and richly layered work, L'Élégance du Hérisson by Muriel Barbery. The novel is an intellectually stimulating and thought-provoking text. To approach this complex text, we read the book in manageable sections between meetings. During our sessions, we take time to summarize passages and storylines, explore a little vocabulary and certain expressions, and discuss overall themes, characters, and philosophical ideas in French.

Italian Conversation

This group is for anyone interested in listening, speaking and improving Italian language. All skill levels are welcome, but beginner participants need to know basic grammar and speak and understand simple sentences.

What: It’s a time to gather with other women to practice Italian and discuss various topics while having fun and without stress. We usually decide the theme of the discussion together.

Happy Trails (15 May 2026)

Happy Trails Group meets to hike nature trails across the Indy area on the 3rd Friday in ODD months. Participants need to be able to hike intermediate level trails - which means uneven terrain, moderate inclines and switchbacks - for approximately 1 hour. No dogs allowed.

What: Get outdoors, explore Indy’s nature trails, and enjoy lively conversation!

When: Friday, May 15 at 2-4pm - trail conditions & weather permitting

Where: Eagle Creek Park; please note there is a $6 entrance fee for Marion County residents and an $8 entrance fee for residents of other counties. Enter the park from 56th street or 71st street, park at “Lilly Lake South Lot.” We will hike portions of the red & blue trails, to the Ornithology Center and around the Bird Sanctuary. This hike will be on the more challenging end of the skill level spectrum with steeper inclines, stairs, and rough terrain.

Traditions & Treasures (20 May 2026)

Join "Traditions & Treasures," a monthly gathering where members share personal stories, traditions, crafts, and cultural treasures from their heritage. Through show-and-tell and interactive presentations, we celebrate diversity, spark curiosity, and deepen appreciation for our international community.

Please join us for an afternoon at a “Middle Eastern bazaar” where you can find an assortment of handmade goods and clothing, in this case abayas made in Lebanon and Syria (which used to be one country pre-20th century). The abaya is a long caftan-like robe. They can be light-weight for summer and worn at home for comfort or they can be of heavier fabric and very fancy and worn at parties and on special occasions.

This dining group is unique to IWI for it involves an evening meal at a host's home where spouses and partners, significant others or single members may also attend. The group is ideally suited for those who find new cuisines, intriguing conversations and enjoying a homemade-themed meal, inviting. Dinners are on a set schedule (typically on a Saturday evening) every other month. The theme is designated by the Group Leader and coordinated with Volunteer Hosts. The cost of the meal is divided between the members of the group attending. This group can only continue to function by having many gracious volunteers.
